Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Artwork of the radio message (centre) beamed towards the star cluster M13 from the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico. The message was sent in binary code, the "language" that computers use to communicate with each other. The SETI project, or Project Phoenix, is designed to discover if there is intelligent life in the universe by searching for radio transmissions from other civilisations. The message to M13 was sent in 1974, and if an intelligent civilisation receives it and answers, a reply should arrive back at Earth in about 48,000 years.
