Darwin spacecraft, computer artwork of the ESA (European Space Agency) spacecraft in orbit. The Darwin mission wwa to consist of a flotilla of eight craft, comprising six infrared telescopes (three seen here), a central hub (lower centre) and a communications satellite to relay signals to Earth (not seen). The aim of the mission was to search for nearby Earth-like planets. The spacecraft were to be placed in orbit beyond the Moon at the second Lagrangian point (L2) location. Darwin was scrapped in 2007.
