The Einstein Observatory X-ray astronomy satellite during preflight checkout. The spacecraft's solar panels are wrapped around it in launch configuration. Originally designated HEAO-2 (High- Energy Astrophysics Observatory 2), the Einstein Observatory was launched in 1978. It was 5.8 metres long & weighed 3 tonnes. It carried 2 X-ray imaging telescopes & 2 spectrometers. It failed in 1981, but during its 30-month life it revolution- ised X-ray astronomy.
