XMM-Newton telescope mirror. Reflection patterns on one of the gold-plated mirrors used in the European Space Agency's (ESA's) X-ray Multi- Mirror telescope (XMM) satellite. The mirrors were made by the Media Lario company in Italy, and are only a millimetre thick. The XMM telescopes were built and tested from March 1997 to September 1999, and are designed to study high-energy phenomena such as supernovae and black holes. The satellite was successfully launched in December 1999, and the original mission lifetime of two years was later extended to 2010.
