Development test model of the Galileo spacecraft seen here in its launch configuration. Galileo was launched on 18 October 1989 by Space Shuttle Atlantis. The journey to Jupiter will take six years, the tortuous gravity-assist trajectory includes one Venus fly-by and two Earth fly-bys. Galileo encountered asteroid 951 Gaspra on 29 October 1991. Arrival at Jupiter is scheduled for 7 December 1995. As well as making direct studies of Jupiter and its moons, Galileo will act as a data relay for an atmospheric probe. Failure of the main antenna to deploy threatened the completion of the mission, but has been overcome by improved data handling techniques.
