Artist's impression of NASA's Magellan spacecraft performing its survey of the planet Venus. Magellan was launched from the space shuttle in May 1989, at the start of a 15-month expedition to Venus. Once in Venetian orbit, the spacecraft will use a novel radar system to penetrate the dense clouds which envelop the planet and provide photographic images of the surface.
