Artist's impression of the Comet Rendezvous/ Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) spacecraft, releasing its penetrator probe toward Comet Kopff. CRAF is due for launch in 1995, making a complex series of planetary flybys to reach the comet. On its way, CRAF will encounter asteroid 499 Hamburg in January 1998. Comet Kopff will be reached in August 1998. CRAF will establish orbit around the comet, and fire a penetrator probe into its surface. The mission will follow Comet Kopff around its closest approach to the Sun in December 2002, and will monitor the comet for a further year. During the mission, CRAF will use a variety of imaging and sample analysis instruments.
