Huygens probe at Titan. Artist's impression of the Huygens probe on the surface of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. The surface of Titan is depicted as a slushy methane ice. The ice appears yellow and brown due to organic compounds created in the ice by photochemical processes. A ring of freshly- exposed ice appears white around the probe. Huygens has been constructed to survive impact on solid or liquid, as the nature of Titan's surface is unclear. Scientists hope that Huygens will return data for between three and thirty minutes after landing. Huygens is a European project, part of NASA's Cassini spacecraft, and will arrive at Titan on 27 November 2004.
