Beagle 2 lander on the surface of Mars, computer illustration. This British probe will be carried to Mars on the European Space Agency's Mars Express mission. The small, disc-shaped probe unfolds after landing to expose its solar panels (blue). It carries an array of instruments designed to detect signs of past or present life on the surface of Mars. The instruments include spectrometers, two cameras and a burrowing, soil- sampling "mole". Mars Express is due for launch in June 2003, arriving after 6 months.
