Models of three successful Soviet lunar explorers. At left is Lunokhod 1, the first remote-controlled lunar rover. It was launched aboard the Luna 17 spacecraft on 17 November 1970. On the Moon, it travelled more than 10 kilometres and survived for over ten months. At centre is Luna 1, which was launched on 2 January 1959 and was the first spacecraft to fly past the Moon. At top right is Luna 3, which was launched on 4 October 1959 and became the first craft to photograph the far side of the Moon.
