Solar system. Artwork of the nine planets of the solar system and the rim of the Sun (far left), drawn to scale. The planets are arrayed from top to bottom in order of their distance from the Sun. From top they are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars (the four small rocky planets of the inner solar system), Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune (the four large gas giant planets of the outer solar system) and Pluto, a Dwarf planet of rock and ice. The Sun contains over 99.9 percent of the mass of the solar system, the rest consisting of the gas giant planets, small rocky planets, and rock and ice debris.
