Early Earth. Artwork of the surface of the Earth and Moon early in their history. The Earth is thought to have formed around 4.6 billion years ago from the accretion of rocks. After this time, some 4000 million years ago, the Earth and Moon suffered a heavy barrage of meteor showers, which shaped their surfaces. This is known as the Era of Heavy Bombardment. The showers may have seeded the Earth with the chemicals for the beginnings of life to form.
