Meteor. Computer artwork of a rocky meteor burning up in the Earth's atmosphere. A meteor is a lump of rock or dust that becomes heated by friction as it enters the atmosphere. This causes it to appear as a streak of light in the night sky (a shooting star). A meteor that burns very brightly is also known as a fireball. If it hits the ground it is known as a meteorite.
