Caption

Impactite from meteorite impact. This is a sample of Libyan glass, so-called because it is found in the Libyan Desert (part of the Sahara Desert). It has formed due to the heat of a meteorite impact that has turned the desert sands to glass, and has inclusions of the mineral cristobalite. This sample, which has been polished, measures 7.5 by 5.5 centimetres in size.
