Total lunar eclipse photographed on July 5, 1982. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon enters the cone of shadow cast by the Earth. The moon does not disappear completely during the eclipse, but remains dimly illuminated in red light which is refracted onto it by the Earth's upper atmosphere.
