Partial lunar eclipse, showing the moon resting in the shadow of the Earth. The upper left-side portion has entered the umbra (the darkest part of the shadow), and the reddish cast (similar to that of the setting sun) appears because the reflection of the sun's light is seen after the light has been filtered during its long path through the Earth's atmosphere. Photographed from Randolph, Massachusetts, USA, on August 16, 1970.
