Full Moon. View of the full moon as seen over the Statue of Liberty in New York harbour, USA. The moon is Earth's only natural satellite. The visible side is characterised by large dark areas called the lunar maria (seas) and a huge quantity of craters caused by impacts of falling meteorites. The Statue of Liberty was given to the USA by the French in 1876 to mark the 100th anniversary of independence from Britain.
