Waxing half Moon. Optical image of a waxing (increasing in apparent size) half Moon, seven days into the Moon's 28-day cycle. The phases of the Moon occur as it reveals different amounts of its sunlit face whilst orbiting the Earth. Some of the dark grey lunar seas are seen here. These are large impact craters filled with dark lava.
