Full Moon rising over the Mediterranean Sea. The Moon does not produce its own light. Instead it reflects that of the Sun, with the proportion of the lit face visible from Earth dependant upon the relative position of the Sun and Moon to the Earth. The spin of the Earth causes the Moon to appear to rise from and set below the horizon.
