Caption

Waxing crescent Moon. The Moon is said to be waxing when it is increasing in apparent size. At this stage, the Moon is halfway between New Moon and first quarter (half Moon). The side of the Moon facing Earth has both bright cratered highlands and more recent dark lunar "seas" (maria). These are low basins that were flooded with lava, which then solidified.
