Moon and Mars. Mars is seen at bottom right. The Moon is in its waning gibbous phase here. It is said to wane when it in decreasing in apparent size. A gibbous Moon is one between full and half full. Although the orbital path of the Moon around the Earth is inclined compared to the path of the Sun and planets (called the ecliptic), apparent close approaches such as this are not particularly rare.
