Mosaic of Viking orbiter photos showing the central portion of Candor Chasm, part of the giant Martian canyon system, the Valles Marineris. The layered terrain to the left of the image may have been formed by a huge, ancient lake. The geomorphology of the region is extremely complex. The canyons have been shaped by tectonics, gravity transport (slumping) and wind erosion & deposition and perhaps also by water and volcanism. This image was produced by combining monochromatic frames having a resolution of 60m with lower resolution colour frames.
