Martian volcanoes. Artist's impression of Olympus Mons (background) and the three giant volcanoes Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons and Ascraeus Mons on Mars. Olympus Mons is the largest volcanic feature in the Solar System; it is a massive shield volcano with a height of 27km and a diameter of 600km. These volcanoes are found in the Tharsis mountainous region, an area which bulges about 10km higher than the average surface of Mars.
