Mars. Artwork based on Viking imagery of the whole of Mars, showing the day and night sides. The boundary between the lit and unlit sides is known as the terminator. Mars orbits the Sun at a mean distance of 228 million kilometres, taking 687 Earth days. The dark areas on the surface were thought to be vegetation by historical observers, as they moved with the seasons, but it is now known they are dust plains moved by high winds.
