Simulated Martian soil. Space scientist Derek Pullan holding a beaker of JSC Mars-1 powder, which is used to simulate the soil or regolith on Mars. JSC Mars-1 is made from weathered volcanic ash from the volcano Mauna Kea, Hawaii. It is being used to test sampling tools that will be used by the European Space Agency's Beagle 2 spacecraft.
