Photograph of the surface of the planet Mars, taken by the Soviet Phobos 2 spacecraft. The two Phobos spacecraft were launched in July 1988. Contact with Phobos 1 was lost en route to Mars in October 1988, due to a controller error. Phobos 2 orbited Mars for 57 days before succumbing to computer failure in March 1989.
