Martian volcanic rock. Martian rocks are thought to be similar to those found on Earth. Much of the Martian surface is covered in basalt rocks, a type of volcanic rock. Many of the rocks and the soil are red in colour due to a high content of iron oxides. The grey rocks have a lower iron content.
