Caption

Mars surface. First 360 degree colour panorama taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. This rover landed successfully on the planet on 4th January 2004. The dry, rocky plain that covers much of Mars is seen. NASA scientists chose this location because the 145-kilometre-wide crater may once have contained a lake. The Spirit rover will study Martian rocks and look for water on the planet. An identical rover, called Opportunity, is planned to land on the other side of the planet on 24th January 2004.
