Mars surface. Three-dimensional image of the surface of Mars taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. The rover landed successfully on the planet on 4 January 2004. The grey drag mark (from upper right to centre left) was created when the one of the lander's airbags was retracted. The drag mark is 1 centimetre deep at its deepest point. The rock in the upper right corner is approximately 10 centimetres tall. The Spirit rover, and an identical one called Opportunity, will study Martian rocks and look for water on the planet. This image was created using data from Spirit's panoramic camera.
