Opportunity rover on Mars. Panoramic 360-degree view of the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on the surface of Mars. This view is one of the first taken soon after landing on 24 January 2004. Parts of the rover (solar panels, black) can be seen, as well as parts of the landing craft. A landing ramp (white) is at lower centre. Partially retracted airbags are at centre right and left. The rover landed in an area called Meridiani Planum. Most of the landscape is desert, but an outcrop of rocks (lighter colours) is seen at left. This panorama was taken with Opportunity's navigation camera. This rover, and an identical one called Spirit, will study Martian rocks and look for water.
