Opportunity rover on Mars. Martian bedrock (light colour) and desert sands, seen from the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity soon after it landed on 24 January 2004. Parts of the rover (undeployed mast at left; and solar panels, black) are seen in the foreground. This image was taken with the navigation camera. The rover landed in an area called Meridiani Planum. Opportunity, and an identical rover called Spirit, will study Martian rocks and look for water on the planet.
