Caption

Trench dug by Opportunity on Mars. Mosaic image showing the hole (lower left) dug in the Martian soil by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. The rover used one of its wheels (lower centre) to dig the trench. Opportunity will use its scientific instruments to examine the freshly- exposed soil. Opportunity's lander is at upper right, where it stopped after landing on 24 January 2004. The tyre tracks in the soil show the course of the rover's journey since leaving the lander on 31 January 2004. This picture is a composite of images from Opportunity's navigation and hazard-avoidance cameras.
