Panorama from Columbia Hills, Mars. Mars Exploration Rover Spirit in August 2005. The rover landed in the Gusev Crater, Mars, in January 2004, and has been exploring the region ever since. This view is from the top of Husband Hill, a peak in the Columbia Hills that are named after the astronauts who died on the space shuttle Columbia. The view shows new, unexplored terrain, the Inner Basin (centre) for the rover to explore. Wheel tracks at right show where the rover came from. Parts of the rover are seen in the foreground, including the solar panels. This image is a mosaic of separate images from the rover's panoramic camera.
