Caption

Coil of superconducting wire. The wire seen here is about ten metres in length, and is made of an alloy of niobium. When cooled below a critical temperature (about 10 to 20 Kelvin), the wire loses its electrical resistance and becomes superconducting. This is used in the production of extremely powerful electromagnets.
