Superconductor research. A molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) unit, used to create a record-breaking superconducting material in late 1993. The MBE unit was used to create atom-thick films of a bismuth strontium calcium cuprate in a crystalline substrate. The resulting material becomes superconducting at 250 Kelvin (-23 Celsius), some 117 degrees Kelvin warmer than the previous record. The material was created by the UPR5 research team, led by Michel Lagues, at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), near Paris.
