Ceramic high-temperature superconductor. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a ceramic, high-temperature superconductor. This superconducting metal material is made up of lanthan, barium and copper-oxide. Superconductivi- ty occurs in certain materials at very low temper- atures, & high temperature superconductors work at relatively higher temperatures. Superconductors carry electrical current with little or no resist- ance. They have a range of potential applications and much research has been carried out into the search for materials which are superconducting at higher temperatures. Magnification: x4,000 at 6x7cm size.
