Photograph of the constellation of Virgo, with the constellation stars enhanced. Virgo, the Virgin, is the sixth of the twelve constellations or signs of the Zodiac. The virgin is an old & astrologically important constellation. In the earliest records, she is a mother goddess. She was Kanya, mother of Krishna in India; Ishtar in Babylonia; Isis in Egypt. In Greece & Rome, she was Astreae, daughter of Zeus & Themis. The modern "virgin" may come from her identification with Mary by early Christians. The Sun is in Virgo from 23 August to 22 September.
