Lambda Orionis nebula. Enhanced optical image of nebulosity surrounding the star Lambda Orionis (centre right). This nebula is classified as Sh2- 264. It is an emission nebula, a huge cloud of gas and dust which emits light due to ionisation of its gas by radiation from hot stars embedded in it. It is thought that Lambda Orionis itself powers this nebula. The two stars below Lambda Orionis are Phi 1 (right) and Phi 2 (left) Orionis. This image was produced by a CCD (charge-coupled device) which stores images electronically rather that on film.
