Caption

Emission nebula NGC 896, optical image. The emission nebula NGC 896 appears red because the hydrogen gas in it is ionised by radiation from the hot young stars within it, producing red light. NGC 896 lies some 2500 light years from Earth, in the constellation Cassiopeia. This image was produced using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
