Reflection nebulae VdB 14 & 15, optical image. The Van den Burgh (VdB) 14 and 15 reflection nebulae consist of clouds of dust and gas that do not emit their own light but instead reflect the from stars embedded in them. VdB 14 (upper centre) is a pure reflection nebula, appearing blue because blue light is being scattered more than red light. VdB 15 (lower centre) has pink residues in its blue halo. This is because the large star within it is producing radiation, which is ionising some of the hydrogen gas in the nebula and making it glow red. These nebulae lie in the constellation Camelopardalis.
