Trifid nebula. Optical image of the Trifid nebula (M20). This is an emission nebula, a large cloud of gas and dust which glows red as the hydrogen gas it contains is ionised by the radiation from hot young stars within it. The Trifid nebula lies in the constellation Sagittarius. This image was produced using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
