Star formation. Optical image of the young Herbig- Haro object HH-34, the small object at centre with the prominent bright jet and two symmetrical shock waves. The jet is dense gas ejected at high velocity by the new-formed star. HH-34 is 1500 light years from Earth near the Orion nebula. This image was made with the 8.2m Very Large Telescope 'Kueyen' at Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
