Star birth region. Optical image showing part of the Chamaeleon I complex, a region of new star formation. Bright, young stars dominate the image, their radiation making nearby filaments of gas glow. This image was made with the 8.2-metre Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile.
