Open star cluster M26, optical image. This type of cluster is also known as a galactic cluster. M26 lies around 5000 light years from Earth in the constellation Scutum. Open clusters are physically related groups of stars held together by mutual gravitational attraction, which are thought to have been formed from the same gas/dust cloud. Open clusters have a relatively short life, M26 is approximately 90 million years old.
