Open star cluster NGC 457, optical image. NGC 457 is an open cluster containing about 100 stars. Open clusters are groups of stars that all formed from the same cloud of gas and dust. NGC 457's stars are relatively young, at 10 million years old. They appear closely affiliated towards the centre of the cluster but are only loosely bound by gravity and will eventually drift apart. NGC 457 lies about 9300 light years from Earth, in the constellation Cassiopeia.
