Image-processed photograph of the "Red Rectangle" star taken in red light with a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera. The "Rectangle" is a region of very faint nebulosity surrounding a bright star, & the camera's wide dynamic range reveals the faint extensions, colour coded here for intensity of emission, without contamination by the star's light. At the heart of the camera is the CCD, a type of integrated circuit. The vertical feature apparently bisecting the star is an artefact.
