Star trails. Long exposure photograph of star trails at dawn over rock formations. Star trails are lines of light made by the relative movement of the stars through the night sky as the Earth rotates. The trails reveal the variety of colours and brightnesses of the stars in the sky. The star trails form concentric circles centred one of the Earth's Celestial Poles (not seen here). The two Celestial Poles are a point in the sky directly above South Pole in the southern hemisphere and another point above the North Pole in the northern hemisphere.
