Artwork representing a Jupiter-like gas planet together with two satellites as seen from an Earth-like moon. These planets are mainly composed of hydrogen and therefore it is impossible to define a solid surface. Hydrogen is present in the atmosphere in the usual gaseous form, but deeper down, due to the extremely high pressure it comdenses into a liquid state. If pressure exceeds 4 million bars (the atmospheric pressure on Earth is about 1 bar) a new transition occurs from the liquid to the metallic state. Metallic hydrogen consists of ionised protons and electrons, such as in the Sun's interior, but at a temperature 1000 times lower.
