Caption

Extrasolar planet. Artwork of a hypothetical alien planet under extreme heat conditions. A neighbouring gas giant planet and parent star is seen in the sky. This planet orbits its parent star in an elliptical orbit which causes extreme changes of climate. Such a planet would annually experience extreme heat conditions when it passes near its parent star, or extreme cold conditions when orbiting far from the star (see image R650/253). Many recently discovered extrasolar planets have elliptical orbits.
