Ring of icy bodies. Artwork of a ring of icy bodies orbiting a sun-like star. Many stars contain far out distant rings of icy debris. It is believed that these objects are remnants of the accretions which formed the planets; the denser materials closer to the star formed the planets whereas these less dense parts were forced further out. The icy bodies remain in orbit, kept there by the gravitational effects of giant planets. The icy ring of bodies surrounding our solar system is known as the Kuiper Belt.
